Synopsis: What begins as a minor accident sets in motion a series of escalating consequences.
Jafar Panahi: Jafar Panahi was born in 1960 in Mianeh, Iran. After studying at the Iran Broadcasting University, he began his career with short films and documentaries, later working as an assistant to Abbas Kiarostami. His debut feature, The White Balloon (1995), co-written with Kiarostami, won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. He continued to gain international acclaim with The Mirror (Golden Leopard, Locarno), The Circle (Golden Lion, Venice), and Crimson Gold (Jury Prize, Cannes), all of which addressed social issues in Iran and were banned domestically.
In 2006, Offside earned him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale. Despite a 20-year ban imposed in 2010, prohibiting him from making films, Panahi continued to work clandestinely. His defiant works include This Is Not a Film, Closed Curtain (Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, Berlin), and Taxi Tehran, which won the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize in 2015.
3 Faces won Best Screenplay at Cannes in 2018. Arrested again in 2022, he was released in 2023 following a hunger strike. That year, No Bears earned the Special Jury Prize at Venice. In 2025, Panahi returns to Cannes with It Was Just An Accident, reaffirming his unwavering voice in global cinema.
